Good morning, Lincoln. Today we're watching a push to change Lincoln city elections, the afternoon storm window, and American Airlines service starting at LNK. Plus, quick hits and events below.

Need To Know

Petitions target Lincoln's city election rules

A petition drive is pushing three possible Lincoln charter changes that would restructure city elections, including who can vote in some city races and how City Council seats are elected.

Local reporting says the proposals would open some Lincoln elections to people who live outside city limits but inside Lincoln's three-mile zoning jurisdiction, move more council seats toward district-based elections, and change the partisan shape of local races. If petition organizers collect enough valid signatures, Lincoln voters could see the measures on a future city ballot. For readers, the practical question is who gets a voice in city decisions that affect roads, zoning, services, and growth beyond the current city boundary.

Storms may affect afternoon and evening plans

The National Weather Service forecast for Lincoln calls for showers and thunderstorms likely today, mainly after 1 PM, with a high near 82 F. KLKN's latest local forecast flags a stronger window around late afternoon, with storms capable of large hail, 60 mph-plus winds, and localized flooding.

This is a planning story more than a panic story: keep an eye on alerts before school pickups, evening events, and the drive home, especially if storms develop near Lincoln between 4 and 7 PM.

American Airlines service starts at LNK

American Airlines begins its new Lincoln service today, adding year-round flights from LNK to Chicago O'Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth. American's route announcement lists once-daily ORD service and twice-daily DFW service beginning June 4, with seasonal Phoenix service planned for winter 2026.

Lincoln Airport's travel page now lists American among its airlines and says the new service gives Lincoln travelers access to 271-plus destinations through American's network. The reader consequence is simple: LNK has more hub choices starting today, which may matter for summer travel, business trips, and fare comparisons with Omaha.
