Need To Know

Memorial Day brings ceremonies and no StarTran service

Lincoln has three Memorial Day ceremonies scheduled today: morning observances at Wyuka Cemetery and Lincoln Memorial Park, then an evening candlelit ceremony at Veterans Memorial Garden in Antelope Park. The city says attendees should bring seating.

StarTran buses and its office are closed for Memorial Day, so plan around driving, biking, walking, or rideshare if you're heading across town. The evening garden ceremony is scheduled to move to Auld Pavilion if weather becomes a problem.

Hot weather meets opening day at city pools

Lincoln's outdoor public pools are scheduled to open today for the summer season, with daily hours from 1 to 6 PM. Family swim nights begin Tuesday, and Trago Sprayground is scheduled to open Friday.

The timing lines up with a hot Memorial Day forecast. The National Weather Service calls for a high near 91 F, while wttr.in shows a daily high in the upper 80s, so shade and water matter if your holiday plans are outside.

Husker postseason week gets bigger

Nebraska softball is headed to the Women's College World Series for the first time since 2013 after beating Oklahoma State 9-1 Saturday at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers are 51-6 and will face Arkansas on Thursday in Oklahoma City, with game time still pending.

Nebraska baseball also earned a Lincoln Regional host bid for the first time since 2008. The regional runs Friday through Monday at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park if necessary, and the full bracket is scheduled to be announced today.
