Need To Know

Pioneers Park burn closes one trail today

Lincoln Parks and Recreation says staff will conduct a prescribed burn from 1 to 4 p.m. today on about 5 acres of remnant prairie north of the sledding area in Pioneers Park. The city says the equestrian trail in the sledding area will be closed during the burn, while access to the Pioneers Park Nature Center will remain open.

Parks staff say prescribed burns help manage native plants and grasses, reduce wildfire risk, and improve habitat. If Pioneers Park is part of your Wednesday routine, avoid the burn area and expect smoke near the sledding hill.

Cooler weather follows the storm stretch

The National Weather Service forecast for Lincoln calls for a high near 60 F today with partly sunny skies and only a slight chance of daytime rain. A chance of showers returns after 1 a.m. Thursday, with more rain chances later in the week.

The cooler day comes after NWS storm surveys confirmed multiple tornadoes across eastern Nebraska from Sunday and Monday, including damage in Nemaha County and near Auburn. Lincoln's main planning note today is calmer weather, but keep an eye on the Thursday and Friday rain chances if you're trying to finish yard cleanup or outdoor errands before Memorial Day weekend.
