Need To Know

Lincoln Airport's biggest runway project keeps moving

Lincoln Airport is in the first year of a full reconstruction of Runway 18/36, the airport's primary runway and its longest airfield asset. The airport says the runway is 12,901 feet long, dates in part to the mid-1950s, and is being rebuilt to modern FAA standards.

Construction began in January and is expected to run into fall 2027. Commercial service is continuing during the work, using Runway 14/32 during the first two phases and part of Runway 18/36 later in the project. The airport says the reduced access to the primary runway may cause inconveniences and delays during inclement weather, so LNK passengers should keep checking flight status during stormy stretches.

On This Day

On June 8, 1884, the Lincoln-based Nebraska State Journal published a detailed story about a supposed "blazing aerolite" that crashed near Benkelman. The report became one of Nebraska's strangest early newspaper tales, remembered today less as astronomy than as a glimpse of how frontier-era papers mixed wonder, rumor, and spectacle.
